Bombs discovered at Edmond apartment leads to two arrests
Just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Edmond police were notified of a suspected explosive device at the Christopher Place apartments, 101 N Boulevard, police spokeswoman Jennifer Monroe said.
EDMOND — Two men were arrested Thursday after firefighters investigating smoke found two bombs in an apartment.
Casey Hampton, 18, and Hillrey Young, 21, were each arrested on three complaints of manufacturing an explosive device. Hampton faces an additional complaint of first-degree arson, officer James Hamm said.
Hampton lived in the apartment, and Young was a friend who sometimes stayed there, Hamm said.
What happened
About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, officers were notified about the devices at the Christopher Place apartments, 101 N Boulevard, police spokeswoman Jennifer Monroe said.
Bomb squad technicians disarmed two devices — one was a pipe bomb, and the other was described by technicians as an improvised explosive device, Hamm said.
The scene was cleared by 7 p.m., he said.
Residents in surrounding apartments were evacuated for several hours, Hamm said.
“I was watching a movie and heard what sounded like fireworks,” said Jermaine Good, who lives at the complex.
He said he ran outside and heard the smoke detector going off and saw smoke coming from the apartment across the hall.
Good said the occupant of the apartment told Good he was smoking and had fireworks in his apartment, and that his cigarette got too close and ignited the fireworks.
Hamm said a passer-by reported an explosion in the area about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, but officers did not see smoke or find anything suspicious when they searched.
