In “A Wanted Man” (Delacorte Press, $28), Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher mystery, Reacher is trying to get to Virginia using one of his regular means of transport: hitchhiking.

It's a winter night in Nebraska. With a broken nose, he looks more beat up than usual, so his chances seem slim. But a car stops, and he's picked up by two men and a woman. They're all wearing the same style shirts, and one says they were in a training program and are headed to Chicago.

Earlier there was a murder at a deserted Nebraska pumping station. Hearing inconsistencies in their story, Reacher begins to wonder whether they're tied into it. Reacher learns the travelers aren't at all what they seem to be. Now he's involved in terrorism.

This is taut and tense, with Reacher at his best. Child gives us an atmosphere of suspense inside a car on its way through the winter Midwest.
