Book Review: 'Dead Last' by James W. Hall
In “Dead Last” (Minotaur Books, $25.99) by James W. Hall, “Miami Ops” is a weekly television series shooting in Miami, Fla., that's fighting for success.
Sawyer Moss is the writer, and his twin brother, Flynn, is one of the show leads.
Their mother, April, writes obits for the Miami Herald, and Sawyer has been using her obits as an element in the show.
Now, a serial killer is also using the obits to select his victims and even the type of weapon he'll use.
In Key Largo, Fla., semi-recluse Daniel Thorn is grieving in his own way after the death of his wife, Rusty Stabler.
But Thorn's self-flagellation comes to an abrupt end when Buddha Hilton, a young sheriff from Starkville, OK, shows up looking for help from Thorn.
Michaela Stabler, who was Buddha's adoptive mother and Rusty's aunt, was murdered, and the Miami Herald obit on Rusty was left next to her.
Thorn and Buddha go to Miami, and the snooping begins.
The TV series goes on, and the copycat killer does also, but Thorn and Buddha begin to get dangerously close, and the killer realizes something must be done.
Author Hall continues his fast-paced thrillers complete with the little twists that make them so popular.
