Book review: “Father of the Fatherless: The Authorized Biography of Father Nelson Baker”

In January 2011, Pope Benedict XVI declared the American priest Nelson Baker “venerable,” the third to last step of the canonization process.

He now needs one miracle to be declared blessed and another miracle to be declared a saint.

Baker was a priest in Buffalo, N.Y., area who worked with orphaned boys and unwed mothers. He founded various institutions under the title of Our Lady of Victory. He helped thousands of children and adults to live a good life.

Richard Gribble's presentation of Baker's life and times “Father of the Fatherless: The Authorized Biography of Father Nelson Baker” (Paulist Press, $29.95) is a well-rounded history and biography.

The biography is less hagiographical than previous biographies on Baker. Gribble's book does acknowledge that Baker performed miracles before and after his death.

This book is highly recommended to those interested in Venerable Nelson Baker and Catholic Church history.
