In best-selling author Michael Connelly’s "Nine Dragons” (Little, Brown and Co., $27.99), Harry Bosch and his partner are called to a shooting in South Los Angeles. Bosch knew the victim, John Li, and the case looks as if it might be a Triad killing.

Bosch has been a loner, except for a brief marriage to former FBI agent Eleanor Wish. The marriage ended, but they had a daughter, Madeline, who lives in Hong Kong with her mom.

Bosch is working on the Li case when he receives a threat to back off and then a video showing his daughter being kidnapped. With help from Los Angeles forensics experts, Bosch gathers a few clues and heads for Hong Kong. His ex-wife is frantic and blames Bosch for his daughter’s kidnapping, but with a friend, still aids in the search that begins to appear hopeless. Bosch is at the edge of control.

The action is continuous, and we see that Bosch is a lot more human than we suspected. Author Connelly and his Bosch character continue to develop.
