Book review: ‘Star Wars: Heir to the Empire'

Timothy Zahn's novel “Heir to the Empire” is released in 20th anniversary edition.

Now, 20 years after what became the first book in the “Thrawn Trilogy” was released, “Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (The 20th Anniversary Edition)” (LucasBooks/Del Rey, $30) is on the shelf. In addition to the novel, the anniversary edition features annotations from Zahn and others, and a new novella featuring Thrawn.

Zahn notes how the book changed along the way, character name origins and other Easter eggs, and how the book lines up with the books since, and the prequels, which were still years away at the time “Heir” was published.

If you read the book when it originally was released, the 20th anniversary edition is a good way to revisit the material. If you're a “Star Wars” film fan but never dipped into the novels, this is a wonderful place to begin.
