Oklahoma’s win over Missouri landed the Sooners the Big 12 title, a spot in the BCS championship game and, get this, a shopping spree.

A report in Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal reveals Orange Bowl officials creating perhaps the next wave in what has become a bowl gift extravaganza for participants: a $300 credit line at a suite-turned-store to be set up at both team hotels and featuring Sony products.

Bowl gifts have been going high-tech in recent years, with electronic items always a hit with the college crowd.

Orange Bowl officials, in conjunction with Sony, are moving to the shopping spree approach for players in both of their games, the Orange Bowl and the BCS national championship.

It follows the lead of the Florida Citrus Sports group, who operates the Champs Sports Bowl and the Capital One Bowl and debuted a similar plan last year. This year, players in their bowls will be invited to a local Best Buy for a shopping spree of up to $400. The Texas Bowl is giving its players a Best Buy gift card.

Across the board, ideas for bowl gifts are becoming increasingly creative.

NCAA rules allow each bowl to award 125 participants per team with up to $500 worth of gifts. Teams typically pick up the tab for support personnel extending beyond the 125 total.

Here’s a look at what players from OU, Oklahoma State and Tulsa can look forward to:

→BCS championship game: OU

Upon arrival at the team hotel, players will be invited to a suite and provided a folio (featuring school colors and logos) featuring Sony products. They can check off items they want – up to $300 in value – and have them delivered to the address of their choice, according to the SportsBusiness Journal.

And there’s more: a Tourneau watch, a New Era 59fifty hat, Crocs and an Ogio duffle bag.

Holiday Bowl: OSU

Electronics are in the goody bag for the Cowboys, too, with an Insignia LCD 19-inch combo HDTV/DVD part of the package.

There’s also a $45 Best Buy gift card, say, for accessories, like movies or headphones.

OSU players will also receive a Tourneau watch and a Sport-Tek hooded sweatshirt.

GMAC Bowl: Tulsa

The Golden Hurricane lost out on the Conference USA hardware, falling to East Carolina in the league title game. But they’ll claim some bling.

The gift package at the GMAC Bowl features a Timely Watch Co. watch, a ring from Jostens and a hat.

I agree with Barry. It is a shame that highschool sports suffer and force parents to pay for everything while we blow ridiculous taxpayer money on these bowls. Our Country really has its priorities screwed up.

Yes, Mike, I am complaining. Why should tax money go to bowl organizations? I like to play and have fun just like the next guy, but I am sick and tired of the federal money...our taxes, being doled out so teams can have trinkets from the bowl games. Going there used to be enough. Then a t-shirt, then sweat suits, before long everyone will get a car and you and I will be paying for it. Do not know about you, but I seem to recall our economy pretty much sucks right now and this seems like a complete waste of our money. Wacked priorities. But I am just griping because nothing will ever be done. A good catharsis every now and then is gratifying.

Well, Mike, Barry may not be talking about doing anything. But all change begins with knowledge and that is what Barry is offering. Were you aware that the Bowls were a tax-exempt enterprise?

Yeah Barry! You tell them! Now lets start a rally! We'll march all the way to DC...Oh, you just wanted to complain? You didn't actually have any intent to change anything? Well thats fun too, I guess.

All with your hard-earned tax dollars. Yep, you heard it. Almost all of the bowls are tax-exempt entities that have pulled in hundreds of millions of dollars in government handouts and have pulled in hundreds of millions of dollars in receipts without paying a red cent to the IRS. This despite corporate sponsorship which would eliminate all the rest of us from being considered a tax-exempt entity and CEOs that make over a half million a year in salary. Interesting read if you are so inclined http://www.ocregister.com/sports/bowl-bowls-junker-1948815-tax-million

Zach, the only bowl game incident was Granger's shoplifting. If you want to start trading barbs about indiscretions by the other team's players, you will lose big time. How far shall we go back?

Please, identify anything that Granger might be attracted to. Hopefully, he will fight the urge, this bowl game. Five finger discounts don't work too well.

Amazing. The 1986 Orange Bowl gifts featured a cheesy jogging suit with the player's last name stitched on the jacket, a white teddy bear wearing goofy tropical shorts, and a big bag with a virtual smorgasbord of local Miami bank pens, golf tees and other crap as local businesses cleaned out their marketing closets at the end of the year.

And Pettigrew might sock an official for not getting more. Why don't we leave the offenses out of the message board.
