He's never going to main event a major show. He's never going to be someone people will recognize out in public.
But nights like Tuesday are why Nelson, from Oklahoma City, has never given up his craft.
Entering as a heavy underdog against Oklahoma City welterweight Kyle Sherman, Nelson scored a unanimous decision before a standing-room-only crowd at Remington Park.
"This is awesome,” Nelson said. "I had a plan that I knew if I stuck to it, things could turn out well. Kyle's a great fighter, and I had to be at my best.”
Nelson entered the fight five pounds heavier than Sherman and used the extra weight to his advantage.
After a back-and-forth first round, Nelson tagged Sherman with a right hand in the second round and took control of the fight from that point forward.
"I was able to hit him square a couple of times and that really got my confidence up,” Nelson said.
Nelson wobbled Sherman again in the third round, but Sherman fought back and steadied his legs.
The win improves Nelson to 17-19 with 15 knockouts, while Sherman falls to 9-2-1.
In other action, NABA middleweight champion Carson Jones dominated in earning a technical knockout in the second round against John Huskey.
Oklahoma City lightweight Noah Zudhi still hasn't fought past round one. He knocked down Chance Brown four times in the first, with the fight being stopped with two seconds left in the round.
