Boxing coming to Cox Convention Center
After seeing the success of the local Remington Park boxing cards, another promoter is throwing his hat into the ring to try to build on the momentum.

Fight Time Boxing Promotions, led by Anthony McGhee, will present its first card Sept. 20 at the Cox Convention Center.

The main event will feature Oklahoma City light middleweight "Kid” Carson Jones against Michi Munoz. Jones enters at 15-6 with eight knockouts.

While Jones has suffered six losses, his record is misleading. Jones turned 22 earlier this month and fought guys who were too experienced when he first started the fight game four years ago.

Munoz enters at 20-2.

"We want to bring big-time fights back to Oklahoma City,” McGhee said. "We want to bring it to a whole new level. Oklahoma City used to be huge. We want to make it that way again. This is the first step.”

This is McGhee's first attempt at promoting boxing. He's already done one thing right — getting well-known and respected matchmaker Bobby Dobbs as a team member and picking a Saturday where both the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State football teams are not playing. McGhee has promoted concerts under the A&M Promotions banner in the past.

For tickets and more information, call (866) 966-1777. Tickets are also available at all Party Galaxy locations and El Nacional. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

•Brewer returns: A couple of Lawton's favorite sons are returning to the ring in two weeks. Grady Brewer will fight for the first time since winning season two of "The Contender,” the boxing reality TV show searching for the next great champ.

The Lawton native takes on Brandon Wooten in a six-round bout Sept. 12 at the Comanche Casino. Brewer (22-11) defeated Steve Forbes in the final of "The Contender” in the fall of 2006. Injuries did not allow him to capitalize on the new-found fame.

Also on the card will be George "Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah. The winner of his last four fights, Tahdooahnippah enters at 13-0-1 with 12 knockouts. If Tahdooahnippah can avoid injury, he plans on also fighting on the Fight Time card a mere eight days later.

•Father and son to fight on same card: Freestyle Cage Fighting, a fixture in Shawnee, will make its way to State Fair Speedway for the first time Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

While there are 10 fights, the most intriguing part of the card is that a father and son from Tuttle will be fighting on the same card.

Firefighter Scott Landis will make his pro debut while son, Garrick Landis, will also compete. Garrick is 1-1.

Tickets are available at the State Fair box office, all Homeland stores or by calling 1-800-511-1552.
