Boy, 2, drowns in Lake El Reno in Oklahoma

Police are investigating the drowning of a toddler Wednesday at Lake El Reno. The parents were sleeping nearby in a car, police say.

EL RENO — Police report a toddler drowned Wednesday morning in Lake El Reno, and the parents were found sleeping in a car nearby.

The family's names have not been released.

Someone reported seeing a child playing in and around the water about 6:35 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police news release.

A severe thunderstorm with heavy rain was moving through the area at the time.

Officers arrived at the lake and found a child who was about 6 years old near the water. The child's parents were found sleeping in a nearby car, according to the news release.

They told police a 2-year-old boy was missing. He was recovered from the lake and was nonresponsive. Police and paramedics tried to resuscitate the child. The boy was taken by ambulance to an El Reno hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.
