Millwood saw a 10-point lead disappear, then regrouped to pull out a hard-fought 57-52 win over host Carl Albert at the Titan Classic Saturday night.
Millwood took control of the game with a 16-0 run that bridged the second and third quarters, building a 41-31 lead, only to see Class 5A No. 2 Carl Albert fight back to take a 48-45 lead early in the fourth.
But in the closing minutes, Millwood's Ashford Golden scored four straight points, and came up with a crucial steal that helped Class 2A's top-ranked boys basketball team claim the title with its third straight win over a Class 5A or 6A team.
The Falcons scored 24 points in the third quarter, including five 3-pointers — two each from Golden and 6-foot-7 sophomore Jaloni Friday.
Golden finished with 22 points, while Michael Mays had 13 and Friday had 12. Mays added three 3-pointers as Millwood hit eight on the night.
“Once one hits, everybody gets all crunk and we start knocking 'em down after that,” Golden said. “Our coach got into us about that first quarter. Carl Albert is a good team and we really had to fight back.”
Now at 12-3 on the season, Millwood has won nine straight games, eight of them against teams in Class 4A and above.
LONG'S 3-POINTER PROPELS MUSTANG
There was never any doubt when the ball left the hands of Mustang's Jakolby Long.
The sophomore guard calmly released a 3-pointer, burying it for the go-ahead basket with just more than six seconds remaining to lift No. 6 Mustang 51-50 over No. 5 Edmond Memorial in the title game of Deer Creek's Bruce Gray Invitational.
