The election is now over with campaigns complete and ballots cast.

Only the result of the 2008 Heisman Trophy voting remains.

Even though voting closed Wednesday, the final tallies won’t be announced until Saturday night in New York City.

Frankly, we don’t want to wait that long. The Oklahoman conducted an exit poll of Heisman voters, soliciting ballots from 100 pollsters who are members of the media.

The winner: Sam Bradford.

The Oklahoma quarterback received 47 first-place votes and 226 points, beating out Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow. The Texas quarterback had 20 first-place votes and 172 points, while the Florida quarterback had 31 first-place votes and 164 points.

"I’ve never seen it like this, where you can’t go wrong with those three in any order,” Gainesville (Fla.) Sun columnist Pat Dooley said, "and yet you feel sick when you send in your vote because they are all having Heisman seasons.”

Most voters expressed similar sentiments. Many waited until the final days to cast their votes, agonizing over their decision and looking for ways to differentiate between candidates.

For many voters, the decision came down to how to choose between Bradford, McCoy and Tebow.

"Some years, it seems like there’s nobody you really want to embrace,” USA Today writer Steve Wieberg said. "This year, you’ve got three pretty special guys.”

Salt Lake Tribune writer Michael Lewis said, "If they let us vote a three-way tie, I think I would do that.”

The tight nature of the race between Bradford, McCoy and Tebow bore out Wednesday evening. The Downtown Athletic Club announced that only those three players had been invited to the Heisman ceremony.

No Graham Harrell. No Michael Crabtree. No Shonn Greene.

"I’ve voted for the Heisman since 1993, and I’ve never been as conflicted as I am this year,” Rivals.com writer Olin Buchanan said. "All three of those players are deserving, and a valid argument can be made on behalf of each one.

"Do you want to drive a Ferrari, Mazaratti or Lamborghini?”

This is the third time in six years that The Oklahoman has conducted a Heisman straw poll. In 2003, it predicted Oklahoma quarterback Jason White would beat Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning. In 2004, it predicted Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart would edge Adrian Peterson.

The results of the actual voting mirrored The Oklahoman poll.

Could it happen again this year for Bradford?

"Five games of 60-plus points? Fifty-three TDs and six interceptions?” the Albuquerque Journal’s Greg Archuleta said of Bradford’s stats. "Are you kidding me?

"In any normal year, this guy would be a runaway.”

But this isn’t a normal year. Many voters are predicting one of the closest votes ever. The smallest margin of victory came in 1985, when Bo Jackson beat Chuck Long by only 45 points.

Players receive three points for every first-place vote, two for every second-place vote and one for every third-place vote.

"The committee should split the trophy, because all three deserve it,” Orlando Sentinel columnist David Whitley said.

Staff writers Berry Tramel, John Rohde, Andrea Cohen, Jake Trotter, Scott Wright and John Helsley contributed this report.

Tebow is a great player, but he simply did not have the production this year to deserve the Heisman. Not saying it should all be about stats, but he really shouldn't even be in the discussion this year with the kind of numbers he put up. He's 41st in passing yards and tied for 12th in TD passes. He has some decent rushing stats but nothing special. He's only in the running because the media pushes him like a commercial product.

With the way Obama won over McCain, its the type of year when we not only have the 1st President of African American decent, but the 1st Heisman ( Sam Bradford ) who is a Native American. Not that either one really matters, but its that kind of time we are living in that one's achievements in life truely do count for something no matter what your heritage is from

How come there are only 3 people up for Heisman when usually, there are at least 4 people in the running?

I think all of you should get off your knees and stop trying to live through a college team. Heupel was an accurate passer and won the championship. But his arm wasn't strong enough for the pros. Same goes for stinkin Sam.

Hey everyone, I don't know if anyone already put it in here, or if you already know about it and/or have done it, but we need to vote for Bob Stoops for Coach of the Year:

http://www.coachoftheyear.com/

He is on the left side (Div. 1) and about 8 down... so you'll have to Wait until the page fully loads to be able to scroll down.

Too bad they did not list them by order of BCS Rank so he would be at the top. Oh well. You can only vote one time per day, unless your computer does not accept the cookie it places on your computer to inform the site that you already voted today. If they had me program it then it would not matter about your cookie, I would use 3 methods that would be unique to every computer so there could be no way to cheat. But of course, that would not account for the multiple computers, like we have 6, so I voted 6 times, plus had firefox on one of them, which does not accept cookies[my manual setting] so it did let me keep voting. I am going to post this on all the messages for every article about the sooners, just so you know. We need to help Bob Stoops.

Michael, in regards to this comment you made:

> Bradford, White, Heaupel, C. Gundy, Thompson, etc....
> The list goes on...
> What do they all have in common?
> Not good enough to make it in the pros.

You oviously do not know anything about Football. IMHO, you are just here to cause trouble. First of all, you mis-spelled Heupel as Heaupel refering to Josh Heupel. Second, Bradford will get drafted either 1st or in the top 5. He has the size, the mobility, the maturity, the poise and the arm to make any throws on the field. He has thrown the ball 60 yards IN THE AIR right into his recievers hands. Tell me he does not have accuracy or an arm, I don't see any other QB doing that in CF! He has great mobility, but his coaches don't like him running very much as they don't want to risk losing him to a dumb injury. They have no need to call a shot with him holding the ball on more than 2 to 5 plays per game. the only reason other QB's do it is because they don't have the skill around them to get it done any other way!! Make no mistake, Bradford can play ball with the rest of them. If he had to, he could take off on just as many plays as Tebow and McCoy. That is why he is rated the Top QB in CF, even over Matthew Stafford, who is very inconsistent. Stafford is projected to be a great pro QB, but most say that they would take Bradford over Stafford because he is just the Best Athlete in CF! He is Great at just about every sport he plays in.
Richard, Mc - Dec 12, 2008 at 8:49 am
Thomas, I agree to a certain degree, but this individual award showcases the Oklahoma program, the Heisman itself awards a player for the whole teams accomplishments. Take for example if Oklahoma had as bad of an OL as other teams, Sam would not have had the season he had.
Put in another QB in with this OL but that is not Sam, and that QB would not have had the same season as Sam.
Sam deserves this award, yet even as he and McCoy say, it just shows how good the team is and how deserving the rest of the team is.
It really helps the program because the Heisman is the top award you can get in CF. When star players see that, it can only help. It shows that Oklahoma gets great national exposure, and that they can get on a lot of highlight reels if they play for Oklahoma. The same can be said for the rest of the schools that have Heisman finalists and even those who got left out because of all the attention they are giving it.
Richard, Mc - Dec 12, 2008 at 8:37 am
Some of you sure hate OU. Why I can't figure. As for Bradford he is good enough for the NFL. To play QB in the pros you have to have a sharper brain than in college or high school. And he has that. White had trouble because he telegraphs his passes. The only schools that gave him some trouble were Kansas State, LSU, and USC. What did they have in common? It was very fast defensive backs. They could close on our wide receivers once Jason showed who he was throwing to. Josh looked off many wide receivers before he threw. Thus he could have a weaker arm yet have good success in college.

Anybody who sees that mid-air pin-wheel in their mind when Bradford is trying to jump over into the endzone will give him the Heisman! He's got heart and determination and the will to win!!! Go O.U.!!!
Candace, Lakeland - Dec 12, 2008 at 7:32 am
Instead of worrying about one player taking an individual award, I for one am concerned that OU as a team will once again get it's Arse whipped by a more physical, more motived Fla team. Notice I did not say more talented. We have been XXXX slapped 4 time now in the big game and all we talk about is a darn individual award.

Actually, the sources I gave you were well past my supposedly "OU colored glasses"....The NFL Draft experts are all pointing that way and not just the experts on ESPN and definitely not newsok.com......you know the experts that obviously didn't notice that you "played college ball" or supposedly played college ball. He doesn't have a strong arm, but yet, he can make every throw needed with velocity at the next level......but, hey I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, because you played college ball (and those of us who played football at various levels growing up, obviously don't know what we are talking about) who would you say right now could make it in the NFL? Make me speechless with your vast "college football" playing experience and knowledge.....

Michael....you obviously have no clue what you are talking about.....Heupel and White were never predicted to be great or even good NFL QB's...but, most NFL draft experts have Bradford at the top of their list as the best pick right now in all of America for QB in the NFL......If you think this kid is not good enough for the pro's, then you obviously don't know much about football or the NFL....but, thanks for chiming in with your lack of football IQ....

I noticed that the CBS Sportsline website did a similar "straw poll" of 34 voters and determined that Tebow was the winner. Not surprising, given that CBS is in bed with the SEC!! This poll of 100 voters seems a little bit more resaonable, but since it's the Oklahoman survey, it could be similarly tainted in Bradford's direction. IMO, Bradford will (and should) win, but you never know. There is definitely a bias toward anyone in the Eastern time zone.
