NFL blog: Brandon Weeden's flip interception isn't the worst pass by a longshot

by Erik Horne Published: October 16, 2013

The Cleveland Browns said they’re sticking with former Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden under center, even after Weeden threw what was one of the worst interceptions of the season in a 31-17 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Browns are still 3-3 and in the thick of an AFC North divisional race. But this was pretty bad:

Does it warrant a benching? Probably not. Quarterbacks have kept their jobs after far worse plays or stretches of play. Eli Manning might be a two-time Super Bowl winner, but he’s got almost as many interceptions this season (15) as Weeden had in 15 games last year (17). Point: Even the good ones go through funks.

Weeden, who turned 30 on Monday, said he wasn’t familiar with the most famous failed throw in NFL history by former Miami Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremien. Nobody asked him if he was familiar with Aaron Brooks though.

Weeden’s “watershed moment” got me thinking about the worst quarterback throws I’ve ever seen. As a Saints fan in my youth, I was forever scarred by the immortal Brooks Backward Pass.

Weeden’s play doesn’t come close to this. This is so inexplicably bad it’s good:
