Breakdown

Until he hit a 42-yarder before halftime at Texas A&M, freshman kicker Jimmy Stevens was 1-of-4 on field goals beyond 30 yards.

Stoops tried Matt Moreland, who handles kickoffs, on a 42-yarder against A&M, but he too missed wide.

Said Stoops, "The holds are there, the timing is there, you just have to hit them.”

The Sooners are unlikely to pull true freshman Tress Way out of redshirt, which means it’s probably going to be Stevens the rest of the way.

By the numbers

Stevens has misfired on four extra-point attempts and is 4-of-7 on field goals.

To put that into context, Garrett Hartley was 13-of-15 on field goals last season, including a long of 53 yards.

OU’s kicking woes have left 16 points off the board this season.

Looking ahead

The Sooners are hoping the 42-yarder Stevens nailed in College Station will give him confidence the rest of the way.

Missed field goals and extra points could be a killer against Texas Tech and later at Oklahoma State.
