Bricktown lot owners work on parking rates

For the first time in Bricktown history, the majority of parking operators are agreeing to cap their rates to $5 for non-event days and at $10 during special events like Friday night’s concert by John Mellancamp at Ford Center.

During a meeting this week at the Bricktown Brewery, Bricktown Association director Jim Cowan told operators they share the blame for the public’s negative perceptions of parking in the entertainment district.

Some operators, including BPI, which runs lots north of Main Street, and Marsh Pitman, owner of the Power Alley Garage at 222 E Sheridan, were already capping their rates at $5.

Pitman said more communication with the public is needed, however, and noted that on Friday he was charging $2 to park during the lunch hour while a surface lot a few steps away was asking for $10 a space.

The owners of that lot could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Those agreeing to the cap included the Brewer family, who own or control a majority of the district’s surface parking lots. Clifton said they also plan to post “parking menus” to better inform visitors about the lot rates.

the hubby and i went to Dallas this past weekend. we paid $5 in downtown to park (it was all day parking for $5). if dallas can charge $5, Bricktown can charge $5 or less

I have a hard time understanding why anyone would pay to park to get ripped off by overpriced bars and restaurants in Bricktown, when there are much nicer places with better quality available with plenty of free parking elsewhere...

Bricktown has peaked. Greed has taken the fun out of going down there.

Update: I was in Bricktown last night (Friday) and it was a capacity even at Bass Pro. Dan you are right. I believe its also called anti-trust. You could call them the parking cartels. What is keeping them from all agreeing to charge $25 per vehicle?

I for one am tired, and I mean tired of taxes on top of taxes etc.And the same goes for "GREED".Myself my Family and Kids, and also Relatives etc. are not going anywhere near Bricktown, and it is entirely attributed to the Parking "RIP OFF".And why I ask you as an Oklahoman should I or anyone else bring our Money's into Bricktown, where the Prices for Meals or Entertainment are so much Higher then elsewhere around the City or Points beyond.I just as soon for that Matter get "RIPPED OFF" in another City or State for that matter then in my own Hometown. We have Visited Pricktown exactly two (2)times in the very beginning namely the Bricktown Brewery and the Comedy Club, but haven't been back because of the Parking Greed.I know Myself and Family etc. cannot hurt Bricktown by obstaining, but hey it's severall Hundreds of Dollars they are not getting, and I'm not Helping to make the "RICH" even "RICHER".
I'm Happy.............Enough said.
To me it's sort off like the Seatbelt Law,you get Killed with or without depending on the Situation, but like the Parking it's Greed all they want is that extra Money.
And because the Majority and the Have's are contributing nothing will change.
But there is nothing in Bricktown I can not get elsewhere and Cheaper so be it.
I for one like I said are not making the Rich,Richer not in Bricktown or anywhere else.

Sincerly "AGE".

I agree Jill, I have received a ticket in Bricktown. I also wanted to go down there on several occasions to eat but found it difficult if not impossible to find parking when there is a concert or some event happening. I think a fix could be to build a city owned garage. This would fill a big void in driving to all these little lots and hoping to find a spot. If they want retail to truly go into Bricktown they need to have better parking period.

City government is just as much at fault for negative perceptions of parking with all their parking tickets. They are making a fortune, but it's giving the public disincentive to go downtown or to Bricktown.

I don't think Ethics has anything to do with it when it is all about Greed and thats what it is. Too many people give in and park anyways and pay for it. Stupid, plain stupid unless you actually make so much money to just toss away for nothing. It is greed like most business and that is the bottom line. Everyone isout to take from others and give nothing or not much in return. I sure as heck didn't get a cost of living raise when gas, groceries and everything else went up so why would I be so stpupid to give it to someone who is charging to park on a litle rectangle. No different than when you are buried.

Isn't this considered collusive price-fixing? Competitors (the different parking lot operators) are getting together and agreeing to set prices the same. As far as I know, that is obviously illegal. It doesn't matter that it's a "cap" vs. a "floor." That just limits production (i.e., new lots, better services). Isn't that basically business ethics 101 stuff?

Most of the time, you should park at Bass Pro Shops and walk around the canal. It is such a nice walk. You can also try the theater but it fills up on weekends. Of course be sure to give those places some business to return the favor or they will both put up gates and charge admission in the future. I remember going down there last year and seeing Brewer's lots charging $25 to park. Their reasoning was that cities like Dallas charge $25 every day. New Orleans charges $30. New York City charges up to $60 per 24 hours. But we are none of those cities in stature or offerings. Lets keep it real. We are a $5 city.
