Bridge Creek coach expects 20 boards from Ryan Spangler

BY SCOTT WRIGHT, Staff Writer, Published: February 9, 2010
BLANCHARD — Bridge Creek boys basketball coach Jason Sanders is a little surprised if his star forward, Ryan Spangler, doesn’t go for 20 a night.

Not 20 points, but 20 rebounds.

"He’s the best rebounder I’ve ever seen,” Sanders said of Spangler, a junior who averaged 24.7 points, 21.3 rebounds and five blocks over three games last week to earn Oklahoman Boys Basketball Player of the Week honors.

"His instincts are phenomenal. He’s extremely strong and physical. He’s got a mean streak. He wants every rebound, and on top of that, he’s athletic and has tremendous hands — all the tools necessary to rebound.”

For the season, Spangler is at 27.1 points, 19.1 rebounds and 6.1 blocks a game. The Bobcats are 14-6 and ranked No. 18 in Class 3A.

Spangler is modest about his innate rebounding abilities.

"It comes natural, I guess,” he said. "I just see where the ball’s going.”

Spangler and the team’s other four starters were part of Bridge Creek’s football team, which reached the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.
