HUNTSVILLEFormer Huntsville basketball standout Jay Oliphant is the new head coach for the boys team, The Item learned Monday morning.

Oliphant, also a member of Sam Houston State's Southland Conference tournament championship team in 2003, had been the girls coach for the past five seasons.

The Huntsville Independent School District is expected to announce the hire before the end of the day, sources say.

The job opened in February when former coach Larry Carlson resigned after six seasons leading the Hornets.

“It’s a blessing being able to do this as a guy who graduated from Huntsville High,” Oliphant said. “I went to school at Sam Houston and was able to come back here to work. It’s a program with a lot great traditions and I want to keep that tradition going. It’s a lot of talent here. The important thing now is for the players to learn my style of play and once they get that down, we should be fine.”
