SYDNEY (AP) — The Brisbane Roar maintained a nine-point lead in the A-League with four rounds remaining after a 1-1 draw with Sydney FC despite playing with 10 men for the entire second half.
Striker Besart Berisha, who was sent off late in the first, gave Sydney FC a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute before Sebastian Ryall levelled 10 minutes later.
Alessandro Del Piero, who was ruled out with back tightness and didn't play, was the subject of much speculation after the match. Fairfax Media said the Sydney FC board of directors had decided not to offer the former Juventus star a requested one-year extension of his two-year contract which pays him about $4 million a year.
Sydney FC officials did not return telephone calls from The Associated Press on Saturday.
Archie Thompson's last-minute goal gave the Melbourne Victory a 2-1 win over the Perth Glory, moving them into second place. The Western Sydney Wanderers failed to edge closer to the Roar when they played to a scoreless draw with Adelaide United in a match that was delayed by thunderstorms that hit the Sydney area late Saturday afternoon.
The Central Coast Mariners beat Newcastle 3-1.
Melbourne Heart hosted the Wellington Phoenix to complete the round on Sunday.
