BROKEN ARROW — A volunteer who was attacked by a big cat at an animal sanctuary has died. The liger remains at the sanctuary, the owner said today.
Peter Getz, 32, died Thursday night at a Tulsa hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The lion-tiger hybrid gashed Getz Wednesday while he was feeding the animal at Safari’s Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary.
Getz had volunteered at the sanctuary for about a year and a half and worked previously at the Tulsa Zoo, said Lori Ensign, sanctuary owner and operator.
The sanctuary is closed indefinitely, Ensign said. She said the liger, Rocky, is still at the sanctuary.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s animal and plant health inspection service is investigating the attack, an agency spokesman told The Oklahoman.
