Super 30: Broken Arrow's Coleman Key is keeping a level head

Still, Key feels like he belongs among some of the nation's top quarterbacks.

BROKEN ARROW — Coleman Key has gone from unknown to known this summer.

The Broken Arrow quarterback opened the summer by attending the Elite 11 camp in Columbus, Ohio, only to be confused for another quarterback, TCU commit Grayson Muehlstein.

“It was kind of like, ‘OK, I'm not as good as I thought I was,'” Key said.

However, Key delivered a strong performance to show that in fact he is pretty good.

And now after the strong showing and committing to Colorado State, he feels like he belongs among some of the nation's top quarterbacks.

“Personally, I didn't think those guys were any much better than I was, but they've had a lot of exposure; they've had early offers,” Key said. “I felt like I held my own. I felt like I gave it all I had. That's all I could do was go out there and show what I got.”

Key, who is ranked No. 13 on The Oklahoman's Super 30 recruit rankings for 2014, threw for 1,749 yards and 16 touchdowns last season in his first season with the Tigers.

For the 6-foot-5, 224-pound senior, it was a coming-out party.

Still, Key remains grounded, thanks in part to his parents, Scott and Julie.

“It's funny because when I started getting my offers, I would go in there and I would be like, ‘Hey Mom, I got an offer from so and so.' She would be like, ‘That's awesome. Now go do the dishes so you don't get the big head,'” Key said.

“They're always making me keep a level head because nothing good comes out having a big head and thinking you're all that and a bag of chips.”
