Bronson Irwin a lifelong Sooner fan

The majority of Oklahoma’s football players didn’t grow up cheering for the Sooners.

For every Sam Bradford or Gerald McCoy, half dozen are transplants who had never stepped foot in Oklahoma until they got off the plane for their official visits.

But that’s not the case with Bronson Irwin.

The Mustang offensive lineman, who committed to OU in March, grew up bleeding crimson.

His mom graduated from OU. His dad has lived in the state his whole life. And Irwin has been going to Sooner games as long as he can remember.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Irwin, rated the No. 51 overall 2010 recruit in the country by The Sporting News, spoke with The Oklahoman about his first OU football memory, being recruited by offensive line coach James Patton and why getting a scholarship offer from the Sooners was a dream come true.

We really have been going to games since I was in kindergarten, all the way through high school. I have been an OU fan my whole life. We went to the OU-Miami game a couple of years ago. The OSU and Texas games, we go to almost every year — they’re my favorite.

I was kind of shocked, I wasn’t expecting to get an offer from OU. I thought they were going to wait until summer camp to see what I have. But I got a film in to them for junior day and they offered me. It was a good feeling, something I’ve wanted to accomplish for some time. When it happened, it was pretty unreal, really.

The offers I got after OU and Alabama, none of them felt as good. OU really impressed me the most, their offer was the one I wanted the most. (Irwin also had offers from Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Arizona, Oregon, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Missouri and Auburn, among others).

On my visit, we went to the OU-OSU basketball game. I got to sit on the first row with the coaches, coach Patton, coach (Bob) Stoops. A lot of other recruits were with us, DeMarco Cobbs from Tulsa.
