Step 1: Hire away The night of his approval at the school board meeting, Southmoore head coach Chris Jensen reached verbal agreements with three fellow Westmoore assistants and has been adding coaches ever since. Since the Moore School District will start seventh-grade football next year, Jensen will hire from the seventh grade on up. Pending board approval of three final coaches — one of whom is former OU tight end Jason Freeman — Jensen's high school staff will be complete.
Step 2: Surfing for SaberCats With such a short time frame to work with, assistant head coach Jason Melot pulled an all-nighter setting up a Southmoore football Web site, gosabercats.com, the night he was hired. While it's just a personal Web site until school approval, Melot felt like it was necessary immediately. "Anything that comes off (Jensen's) desk, we want the Web site on there — on any calendar, on any schedule, so that our kids know where to go, parents know where to go. Hopefully, the community knows where to go to find out information about Southmoore,” Melot said. Step 3: Calling all players Before they could actively recruit players, Jensen and staff first had to wait for the official district policy. After several weeks of administrative discussion, it was decided that all upcoming seniors who live in the Southmoore district will have a choice between staying with their old school and switching. The only other players who will have a choice are upcoming juniors who lettered their first two years of high school. Knowing which kids he can choose, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. In order to track them down and convince them to play for Southmoore, Jensen had to organize meetings at two high schools and three junior high schools.
