For some local businesses, the potential of a flu pandemic has prompted precautions for their employees and customers. For others, it’s a matter of trying to maintain calm.
Dani Lynch of Thrifty Pharmacy in Oklahoma City has been trying — often in vain — to ease customers’ fears about the possibility of contracting swine flu. Many have ignored her advice that common pollen or surgical masks offer little protection to the virus. The pharmacy’s supply is gone, and won’t be replenished for several days, Lynch said. Customers also have made a run on hand sanitizers and wipes, which Lynch recommends using to stay healthy. "Keep your hands out of your mouth and wash your paws,” she said.‘Reason to be prudent’
Other customers have demanded Tamiflu, which requires a prescription, Lynch said.
Although Tamiflu is designed to treat the illness rather than prevent it, prescription-bearing customers have depleted Thrifty Pharmacy’s supply, she said.
"There is reason to be prudent and concerned, but not hysterical,” Lynch said.
