NORMAN — A bronze bust of the late Sheriff DeWayne Beggs will be unveiled in a public ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cleveland County detention center.
Beggs served as a deputy from 1988 to 1992 and as sheriff from 1993 until his retirement in 2008. He died in 2009.
As sheriff, Beggs worked to get a new jail built. To honor him, the jail built at 2550 W Franklin Road was named the DeWayne Beggs Detention Center. The current sheriff, Joe Lester, said people who admired Beggs wanted to recognize him and his work. Donations helped make the bronze bust possible, he said.
