CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Brianna Butler shot Syracuse to one of the biggest road wins in program history.

Butler scored 22 points to help the Orange erase an 18-point deficit and beat No. 6 North Carolina 78-73 on Thursday night.

Syracuse, just 2-4 on the road entering the night, never had won a road game against an opponent with such a lofty ranking.

"We've had struggles playing teams on the road," Butler said. "And then to come here and play and get a win, it's big for us. It gives us confidence."

Brittney Sykes had 17 points for the Orange (16-5, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who trailed 50-32 with 18 minutes remaining. Briana Day scored 11 points for Syracuse.

Butler scored 17 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer that put her team ahead 72-69 with 2:42 remaining.

After a North Carolina turnover, Sykes hit a jumper to give the Orange a 74-69 lead with 2:05 to play.

The Tar Heels pulled to 74-71 on a putback by Allisha Gray, but Butler answered with a jumper to seal the game.

"They have a neon light in our system to shoot the ball whenever they get ready," Syracuse coach Quentin Hillsman said of Butler and Sykes. "We address them as the two best players in our locker room."

Diamond DeShields scored 21 points to lead the Tar Heels (17-4, 5-2), who had 18 of their season-high 29 turnovers in the second half.

Stephanie Mavunga and Gray each had 16 points for North Carolina.

"Usually in the second half, if it's a close game, we end up pulling away," DeShields said. "This is the first time we've really had to battle like that. I would say that it's part of the maturing process."

The Orange clawed back into the game with a 13-1 run to cut North Carolina's lead to 61-60 with 7:02 to play, holding the Tar Heels without a field goal for more than 7 minutes.
