PROVO, Utah (AP) — BYU star running back Jamaal Williams has been suspended for the season opener against Connecticut on Aug. 29.
The 19-year-old junior says he was suspended because of a combination of a February arrest on suspicion of underage drinking and a July incident that he declined to discuss.
BYU's honor code forbids the use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
Williams announced his own suspension to reporters on Friday night following the Cougars' first practice of fall camp.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall says he intended to handle Williams' one-game suspension internally and was caught off-guard when asked about it by reporters.
