C.J. Henry to play basketball for Memphis

C.J. Henry will don a Memphis Tiger basketball jersey this winter.

The former Putnam City standout said Tuesday that he will enroll at Memphis and begin classes next Tuesday. Henry will play basketball for Memphis this winter and continue his professional baseball career in the New York Yankees organization during the summer.

"This year I haven't been playing as much because of injuries," he said. "I started thinking about it while I wasn't playing. I decided to see where basketball takes me." Henry was picked in the first round of the 2005 MLB draft by the New York Yankees. After being traded to the Phillies, Henry got his release and resigned with the Yankees last November. He injured his neck shortly after training camp in March and has missed the majority of the baseball season.

Henry will join a Memphis program led by John Calipari, who was a assistant when C.J.'s father Carl Henry played at Kansas. Henry signed with Kansas out of high school, but chose Memphis over Kansas to continue his basketball career.

"The opportunity to win a national championship this year," said Henry of why he chose Memphis. "Coach Cal has a great track record of getting guys to the next level.
