KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Oklahoma senior guard Cade Davis continued his late-season surge, scoring 24 points to lead the Sooners to an 84-67 win over Baylor on Wednesday night in a first-round Big 12 Tournament game at the Sprint Center.
OU (14-17) will play No. 10-ranked Texas (25-6) tonight in a quarterfinal game.
Playing the best ball of his career the final month, Davis has averaged 21.3 points the past six games.
Considered a longshot team for an NCAA Tournament berth if they made a run in the conference tournament, the Bears played without freshman star Perry Jones III. He was suspended earlier in the day by the NCAA.
Jones, a 6-foot-11 forward projected to be a top five pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, was suspended for the remainder of the season Tuesday for improper benefits when he was a high school player on the AAU circuit.
Baylor (18-13) is appealing the ruling but it would only apply to Jones possibly playing in the NIT since he's expected to turn pro.
The win was noteworthy because it assures the Sooners (14-17) will win more games than last season's more talented team that self destructed the final month.
OU dominated the final 12 minutes of the first half to turn the game into a rout.
An 18-2 run midway through the first half gave the Sooners a 27-16 lead. OU pushed the lead to 37-18 late in the half, led 39-22 at halftime and was up by as many as 25 points in the second half.
Four of OU's five starters scored in double figures. Point guard Carl Blair scored 14 points and a season-high 11 assists. Cameron Clark and Steven Pledger scored 10 points each.
Baylor was led by Quincy Acy, who scored 21 points and 15 rebounds.
OU shot 57.5 percent, its best shooting outing since non-conference play three months ago.
