The Oscar-nominated big screen adaptation directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway has been hailed for bringing the camera very close and for having the actors to sing live.
While Broadway fans might hope that some of the movie's stars will want to jump aboard the stage version next year on Broadway, Mackintosh thinks otherwise.
"Anne Hathaway will never do that on stage — nor should she. You couldn't do that kind of performance of 'I Dreamed the Dream' onstage," he said.
"The intimacy of of how that song is done is so cinematic and the scale of performance and the way we re-orchestrated for that performance — it's almost an intrusion when you watch what she does with it. And isn't the nature of doing a musical on the stage."
