The sale kicked off Friday and runs through Feb. 13. The council has about 44,000 boxes of candy and nuts for sale, Executive Director Pamela Ballard said.

Prices range from $2 to $5.

Proceeds support Camp Fire programming, such as activities for homeless students and children in foster care.

The sale provides about one-fourth of the agency's annual budget.

Supporters also can purchase candy for U.S. troops, Ballard said.

This is the 11th year the council has distributed candy to members of the military.

The sale teaches everything from public speaking to math, she said. Members can earn rewards to pay for camp registration and for college.

Group leader Melanie Reed took her daughter and some other members out Friday to sell candy in their Edmond neighborhood. Her daughter, Julianne, got into the swing of things pretty quickly.

“She's been organizing the candy all day, putting it in her little wagon,” Reed said.

Julianne quickly got over her shyness after the first few houses, Reed said.

“Once she got the hang of it, she was very bold,” Reed said. “They're having a good time. ... It was cute.”
