We're witnessing an alarming increase of gun-related violence. During celebrations following an exciting basketball game in Bricktown, an altercation occurred and a 16-year-old pulled a gun and sprayed the crowd with bullets. Eight innocent bystanders wounded, one seriously. Two boys waiting for their school bus were attacked by two hood-lums. One boy was pistol-whipped; the other, a 17-year-old, was left paralyzed for life. A probation officer attempting to interview a parolee was attacked by another individual who wrestled away the officer's gun and shot him dead.
Why is a 16-year-old carrying a gun? That a law officer can be shot with his own weapon raises serious concerns for the safety of open-carry gun owners and for their guns falling into criminal hands. Following the recent signing into law of the open-carry bill, some police officials stated the need to conduct studies to establish the ramifications of this law and establish adequate policies for its implementation.
It behooves all legal gun owners and the leaders of the National Rifle Association to provide suggestions to solve some of these problems. We need to balance the rights accorded by the Second Amendment with the safety of the general population. This carnage has no place in a civilized society.
