Can you tile over vinyl?

Published on NewsOK Published: June 30, 2013

Can you install tile over vinyl? The situation is variable according to one company, Country Custom Tile Inc. "There is no simple yes or no answer. It can be done with the proper preparation and investigation into the condition of the vinyl and how well it's bonded to the surface below," states the company's website.

Some other recommendations the Jacksonville-based tile company suggests are making sure the sheet vinyl is clean and free of dirt and other bond breakers, and that sanding or scarification of the vinyl may be required to create a good bond for the grout material you are putting down. The really important thing to check into first is if your vinyl contains asbestos. If so, it absolutely should not be sanded.
