OU athletic director Joe Castiglione already is being bombarded with resumes and tapes from sportscasters seeking the OU play-by-play job. Castiglione is expected to take his time in making a decision with a hiring unlikely this year. With OU developing plans for a television network, this position likely will include more duties than the current job.
Here's a list of potential candidates:
Bob Carpenter: The TV voice of the Washington Nationals, Carpenter is interested in the job and is well familiar with OU from his work on the Sooner basketball telecasts. A longtime Tulsa resident, Carpenter knows the state well and also is a former ESPN sportscaster. A drawback is he has limited radio experience.
Ron Thulin: Another well-known TV play-by-play announcer, Thulin graduated from Southern Nazarene University graduate and worked for KFOR-4. A Dallas resident, he does network freelance work.
Mike Kelly: Castiglione knows the University of Missouri radio voice well since he hired him at Columbia. Solid play-by-play announcer.
Chuck Cooperstein: Dallas Mavericks radio play-by-play announcer who hosts several shows for ESPN 103.3 FM Dallas.
Chuck Kelly: OU baseball play-by-play announcer who also has worked on the OU football pregame show. An Arlington, Texas, resident, Kelly is the voice of the Southlake Carroll High School football team.
Brian Brinkley: OU women's basketball play-by-play announcer and KFOR-4 weekend sports anchor. KFOR sports director Bob Barry Jr. has endorsed him to replace his dad.
Kevin Harlan: The CBS sportscaster recently mentioned that he would entertain a move back to a college campus, but he would have to take a huge salary cut. A former Missouri announcer, he also was hired at Columbia by Castiglione.
John Brooks: Brooks, 71, served as the Sooners voice for 13 seasons in football and 16 seasons in basketball and handled Oklahoma City Blazers play-by-play for 27 seasons.
