Canterbury Choral Society is planning a momentous opening concert for its 45th anniversary Sapphire Season.
On Friday, a collaboration of artists will bring Carl Orff's “Carmina Burana” to life using many canvasses: A local artist will create live an original painting inspired by the music, and 261 singers will lift their voices creating a canvas of harmony, accompanied by the intertwining textures of 56 Oklahoma City Philharmonic instrumentalists.
The music-scape will be further embellished by the audio and video expertise of Cory's Audio Visual, a local company that will incorporate a multimedia technique called projection mapping, a display that will execute live and in time to the music.
Projection mapping is an emerging technology in which video is projected onto three-dimensional Spandex shapes, known in the industry as Transformits. In this case, the projection will feature live video of the singers, musicians, artist, director and other images.
Through live video, color and other video techniques, the effect will add a unique visual experience to the event, said Tucker Dragoo, production manager at Cory's.
“It's all live. We will be ‘playing' the technology. It's not like we go in there and hit ‘play' and it all just happens. We'll be back there just like the musicians doing our part,” Dragoo said. “The goal is that when people walk into the room, it's going to look like it's just lit up with lights. But as we get into the show, that's when the projection portions will start. It should be very impressive.”
Artist Chad Mount will create an original two-foot by three-foot painting as the cantata is performed in the Civic Center Music Hall.
“One reason I'm really thrilled is that they were open to trying something innovative and new that hasn't been done around here before,” Mount said.
“Collaborating with so many people and such a large sound and presenting Oklahomans with this visual spectacle complementing the ‘Carmina' experience overall will be amazing.”
The program will feature world-class soloists Penelope Shumate, Jeffrey Picon and Brandon Hendrickson, the Oklahoma City University Men's Chorus, Ad Astra Women's Chorus, Canterbury Choral Society and Canterbury Youth Choruses.
