A Canute youth drowned in Foss Lake north of Foss in Custer County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Monday.

Dillian Matthew Keith, 17, was with three family members trying to swim from the Sandy Beach area to Sandy Beach Island about 2:30 p.m. Friday, troopers said.

The group had made it about halfway through the 300-yard swim when everyone but Keith decided to turn around.

Keith continued swimming to the island, but one of the swimmers returning to the beach turned around shortly thereafter and saw no sign of him, the patrol reported.

Officials recovered Keith's body about 11 p.m. in 71/2 feet of water about 150 feet from the Sandy Beach shoreline, troopers said. He was not wearing a life vest.

A Canute school secretary said Keith had recently moved there from Henryetta and would have been a student at Canute schools in the fall.
