Carl Albert's Madisyn Long committed to Oklahoma State, didn't feel pressure to follow in sisters' footsteps

Her sisters Savannah Long and Karolyne Long went to play softball at Oklahoma, but Madisyn Long didn't feel like she had to do the same. She does have at least one Cowboy in the family, though — Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is her uncle.

It wasn't hard for Carl Albert's Madisyn Long to go the other direction.

After her older sisters, Savannah and Karolyne, went to play softball at Oklahoma, there wasn't any undue pressure on the youngest of the group to follow in their footsteps.

It wasn't a big surprise when Madisyn, a shortstop, decided to pick Oklahoma State without much of a second look.

The youngest Long committed to the Cowgirls as a sophomore after falling in love with the program during a camp visit as a freshman.

“I knew I wanted to go somewhere big like that,” Madisyn Long said. “I've always liked Oklahoma State. I supported my sisters when they were at OU but I felt like I would fit in better at Oklahoma State.

“I've never seen myself going to OU. I just always liked the campus and everything else about the school and program.”

One reason it wasn't a big deal for the family?

Long's uncles — Mike and Cale Gundy — had a Bedlam split in the family and remain on each side, Mike as Oklahoma State's head coach and Cale as an assistant at OU.

Long wants to outdo her older sisters, both in college and in her last season of high school softball.

“There's a lot of fun when it's the three of us but just about everything is competitive,” Long said. “We always just play around about who throws harder or stuff like that.”
