Saddled with foul trouble, Edmond North senior Carlbe Ervin fought through to score a game-high 25 points and lead the Huskies to a much-needed 69-61 win over visiting Edmond Santa Fe on Friday night.
Ervin had 14 points in the first quarter, including a monster slam, followed almost immediately by a 3-pointer. But foul trouble hit, and he had to spend significant minutes on the bench from the second quarter on.
“Carlbe came out with great energy. He's our tone-setter,” first-year Edmond North coach Steven Goss said. “I thought he did a great job defensively, too.
“I told him at halftime that even though he was in foul trouble, he needed to still be aggressive, and I thought he did a good job of that in the second half.”
Goss said the win provided a needed boost for the Huskies, who have gone through a rough stretch with losses in four of their last seven games.
“It was paramount for us to get a win like this one before we go into the playoffs. It was really big,” he said.
MEMORIAL WINS WITHOUT COWHERD
No. 2 Edmond Memorial backed up Thursday night's win over No. 1 Midwest City with another victory Friday, this time doing it without its head coach on the sideline.
Coach Shane Cowherd was serving a one-game suspension from the OSSAA for what an Edmond administrator called “a minor rules violation” regarding a misinterpreted rule.
Wichita State signee Shaquille Morris had 17 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 75-42 win over Southmoore on Friday.
Morris also had 17 Thursday in the 69-62 win over Midwest City, the Bombers' first of the season. Edmond Memorial was led by Jordan Woodard with 22 points.
UNDERCLASSMEN BOOST NORMAN NORTH
This might not be Norman North's year to make a run in Class 6A.
The Timberwolves, though, sure look like a team of the future.
No. 18 Norman North used a lineup of primarily freshmen and juniors to avenge an earlier loss to rival Norman, winning 52-49 on Friday night in the Crosstown Clash.
