Playbill reports that Checotah native Carrie Underwood will take on the iconic role of Maria von Trapp a live broadcast of “The Sound of Music” from NBC. The show is expected to air near the holidays in 2013. It will be a live performance of the Broadway version of the story.
“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement quoted at Playbill. “She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the musical producers behind “Smash” and film versions of “Chicago” and “Hairspray,” are producing the updated version of “The Sound of Music.” The show will air live with no lip syncing. Zadan and Meron have films and TV movies to their credit that have won six Academy Awards, 11 Emmys and two Peabody Awards. Their work in theater has received 12 Tony nominations, including two wins. They also have received five Grammy nominations.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1959; in 1965, Julie Andrews played Maria von Trapp in the film version, which won a Best Picture Academy Award.
Underwood is a 2005 “American Idol” winner who has won five Grammy Awards over her career.
