Putnam City senior Carson Lynn couldn't have had a much better game last Friday night.

Score a touchdown, kick a field goal and beat your rival — not bad for a kid who wasn't even playing football a year ago.

A lifelong soccer player, Lynn joined the Pirates early last September to help with kickoffs and punts. Then one day, coaches asked him to fill in at receiver during a practice when the senior players were attending another event.

Within a couple weeks, he had worked his way into the receiver rotation, and this season, he's one of quarterback Caleb Lee's top targets.

"Last year he did a good job, but it was his first time playing receiver, so he wasn't real used to it," Lee said. "This year, he's had a lot more practice at it and he's doing real good. We're good friends and we've always tossed the ball around. I've always tried to convince him to come play, but he never would.

"This year, he's really gotten into it."

Lynn had played football before, but gave it up after his freshman year to focus on basketball.

"In summer league before my sophomore year, I got some playing time on varsity," he said. "I figured I'd have the best chance in basketball if I skipped football."

Lynn was half-joking with Putnam City assistant football coach Eddie Wright — also PC's soccer coach — about coming out to kick for the football team last September. But Wright liked the idea and brought him out to practice.
