Cement HS basketball player collapses, dies in Tuesday game

The Minco-Union City Times reports that a Cement High School basketball player collapsed and later passed away in a game against Union City on Tuesday night. The Minco-Union City Times Facebook page says that the game at Cement was called off in the third quarter after a Cement player collapsed.

A Cement boys basketball player collapsed during Tuesday’s game against Union City and later died at the hospital, rocking the small community in Caddo County.

Seth Martin, 15, died at OU Medical Center late Tuesday evening, his older brother Zachary Wright told The Oklahoman via text message.

Martin had been on the bench during the game when he stood up and then collapsed. He was airlifted to OU Medical Center where he later died.

“Everybody’s in shock,” Cement superintendent Danny Pittman said. “Fortunately, we’ve been pretty lucky that we have several counselors from around the area and we also have several of our local ministers here today. We’re making plans for the next several days in trying to make sure we’re taking care of our staff and our students.”

Around three years ago, Martin was diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction, a condition where a person's vocal cords close instead of open when breathing in and out. The condition had caused issues while playing basketball, but Wright said Martin had been able to control the condition and play through it. However, Wright said doctors believe Martin’s heart caused his death.
