For the ninth year, bike enthusiasts across Oklahoma will pedal to meeting grounds in several communities to show their appreciation for the sport and their desire to offer an alternative to driving.
Bike rides will be sponsored by the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments this week in Edmond, Oklahoma City, Norman, Guthrie, Moore, Midwest City and Yukon.
The Edmond bike ride will begin at 7:15 a.m. Friday at Mitch Park, 1501 W Covell Road.
From Mitch Park, bicyclists will travel about four miles to Festival Marketplace, where they will be given refreshments and prizes.
“The rewards serve as a great incentive for the riders,” program coordinator John Sharp said.
The League of American Bicyclists declared May National Bike Month in 1965 and later declared May 17 National Ride Your Bike to Work Day.
Sharp said participants often ride their bikes to work after participating in the designated bike ride or simply ride their bikes to work instead of following the designated riding route. Times, dates and routes for rides in each community can be found at www.bikedayok.com.
