PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's governor is lifting a ban on non-essential travel now that crews have begun to make progress clearing snow from roads.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced that the ban is ended at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The temporary restrictions were intended to help crews remove snow from clogged roads and aid utility workers as they work to restore power to customers now without electricity. More than 180,000 businesses and homes lost power during the storm.

State police say no injuries or significant accidents were reported on state highways, though many cars will have to be dug out of snow drifts.
