Chandler beats Millwood in Class 2A quarterfinal

CHANDLER — In game that ended five and a half hours after it started and was played in two towns, Chandler bested Millwood 40-0 Saturday in a Class 2A quarterfinal game.

A blown transformer late in the second quarter caused a blackout at L.W. Good Stadium. Chandler was leading the homestanding Falcons 7-0 at the time.
After about a 45-minute delay, Millwood athletic director Avery Gilliland determined that even if the transformer was repaired the game would not be able to continue because the circuit box at the stadium was burned up when the transformer blew.
Gilliland said the OSSAA gave three choices for completion of the game: 1) play at Millwood Sunday afternoon; 2) play at Chandler Sunday afternoon or 3) continue the game at Chandler, starting at 11 p.m. Saturday night.
After both coaches agreed on the late-night continuation and relocation, fans and teams headed for Chandler at 9:15 p.m.
“I’m like everyone else — that’s got to be a first,” said Chandler coach Neal Bacon. “But once we got the game started again, it just seemed like any other game. I think our kids were pretty excited about coming home, even if it was in the middle of a game.”
Not everyone was pleased.
“I really wish the game would have just postponed the game,” said Millwood standout receiver Cameron Stewart. “I just think it made a lot more sense to come back and play in the afternoon than pile everyone and everything into cars, go up the highway and re-start a game about an hour after we’re used to games ending.
