Changes in election process might help

BY YOUR NAME Staff Writer Published: November 11, 2012

Now that the election is over and there won't be another nationwide one for four years, let's make some changes to the election process:

Term limits on Congress — 12 years for representatives, 18 years for senators — one six-year term for the president.

No ads allowed by outside groups and no ads allowed until 60 days before the election.

Change the voting day from the first Tuesday in November to the first Sunday in November.

What might happen? We could elect a Congress of people who see it as a public service, not a career. We would have a president who isn't worried about being re-elected and might be able to work with members of Congress who don't see their jobs as passing special interest agendas but the people's agenda to improve the country. Citizens wouldn't have to worry about missing work and could go to the polls.

Would it be perfect? Probably not, but what we have now is polarizing an already polarized electorate and is being paid for by individuals who hope to buy their agenda for our country. I don't think that's what the Founders had in mind.
