— Norman North's Peyton Gavras and Channing Meyer shrug off talk of the quarterback battle that went down to just before the season started.

“We read about it all the time,” Meyer said. “But it's not as big of a deal to us. Peyton won and yeah, he's starting, but it never really crossed my mind like that.

“I play football, he plays football and we're better for how it's turned out.”

Gavras is Norman North's starting QB, but both have played big roles in the team's 5-1 start.

Meyer primarily plays receiver now for Norman North, but also sees time at quarterback in virtually every game and has recently started playing some running back as well.

Meyer's versatility has given the offense an added dimension.

“It puts a lot of pressure on the defense,” Meyer said. “When you've got to prepare for three or four quarterbacks, it's that much harder for them to get ready for everything we do.”

The Timberwolves have also started using some defensive players in a Wildcat package, including linebacker Jordan Evans, one of the top defensive recruits in the state for the 2013 class.

Gavras said the way Meyer has handled the situation, throughout their competition for the spot and with the way he's been used, has helped immensely.

“He's done a phenomenal job of handling it,” Gavras said. “He's got to know everything on the offense, from everything the quarterback has to know to the routes at receiver and now the blocking schemes at running back, and he's done a great job with it.
