Mike Gundy and his Oklahoma State coaching staff continue their quick work in recruiting for 2010, landing their fifth oral commitment in the last two months. And this one they swiped from under the nose of a Big 12 Conference counterpart.

Chase Rome, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive end from Columbia, Mo., committed to OSU on Monday, according to multiple Internet reports.

The Rock Bridge High School standout had offers from Missouri, Oklahoma and several other Big 12 schools, as well as Florida.

Rome is on the watch list for the nation’s top 250 players, and ranks him the No. 27 defensive end in the country.

As is common in spring practice, experienced players such as Zac Robinson, Kendall Hunter, Russell Okung and Perrish Cox don’t see extended action in scrimmage situations, because it’s simply not necessary.

The coaches know what those players can do and are better served evaluating younger players and other backups.

"Guys who have been around here and played two or three years, they’re in drills, but when we go live, I want to see the other guys play,” Gundy said.
