NewsOK Sports 10:02 a.m. Welcome to the Friday edition of the Power Lunch chat. Have questions or comments on the Sooners, Thunder or Cowboys? Get them in and Berry Tramel will jump on at 11 a.m. for discussion.
NewsOK Sports 10:56 a.m. Hey, everybody. I'm up and running. So send in your questions and we'll get started.
NewsOK Sports 10:57 a.m. Oops. That was me. Sorry.
NewsOK Sports 10:58 a.m. We obviously have a problem. This is Berry talking. I am trying to fix it.
NewsOK Sports 11:04 a.m. OK, maybe it's working now.
NewsOK Sports 11:04 a.m. Nope. It's not.
Berry Tramel 11:07 a.m. Let's try this again.
max 11:07 a.m. have you heard of any other football players at ou transferring? any that did not enroll for the second semester
Berry Tramel 11:07 a.m. Just Kendal Thompson. He's the only one that I know of.
Patrick 11:08 a.m. Just an idea: Get rid of NBA conferences and divisions, reduce the season to 60 games (everybody plays a home-and-home against each other), start the season on Christmas or New Years, no back to backs, and have an extra day between with the occassional 2 games in 3 nights.
Berry Tramel 11:08 a.m. And pay the players 1/3 less, since the revenues will be about that. That should work. Except they've all got contracts, so you've got to pay them. So it has no chance of working.
Patrick 11:08 a.m. I've guessed for awhile that Westbrook would return January 27th against Atlanta. I know you don't know, but what do you think are the odds of this happening?
Berry Tramel 11:09 a.m. Well, I guess before February, so could be. But every time the Thunder plays well, which is a lot lately, the Thunder has to think, let's take it easy on Russ. So I'm thinking now it will be February.
Guest 11:09 a.m. Berry, its been a few weeks since I have seen leopard print, tackles or anything flashy from Russ. Whats going on here?
Berry Tramel 11:11 a.m. Excellent question. I guess since ryan Gomes got traded, Westbrook feels he's No. 1 on the best-dressed list no matter what (we won't break it to him that Serge beats him by a mile, it's just that no one ever gets to see Serge. Serge after games looks like something out of a Bond movie. Long dark coat, great fedora. Coolest-looking dude on the planet.
Patrick 11:11 a.m. Should we be worried about Kevin Durant's shoulder?
Berry Tramel 11:11 a.m. I assume not, else he wouldn't have kept playing. Although if you say Westbrook kept playing in Game 2 vs. Houston, I can't argue. It looks like KD just banged up.
dr. el prez 11:11 a.m. Berry, enjoy your insights on the Thunder. I told some of the trekkies at Daily Thunder I'd thank you for not using Boomer so much in your pieces as much. Thank you. So there. I was tinkering around the other day ranking the Big 12 basketball coaches one thru ten. Just would you rank them all the way through based on their total coaching resumes to date?
Berry Tramel 11:14 a.m. Interesting. Based on career body of work, I'd go like this. 1. Bill Self; 2. Bob Huggins; 3. Lon Kruger; 4. Tubby Smith; 5. Rick Barnes; 6. Scott Drew; 7. Travis Ford; 8. Trent Johnson; 9. Bruce Weber; 10. Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg ranks low because he's just getting started. Drew ranks higher than most would think because he's put Baylor hoops on the map, even if he is overmatched on the sidelines. And go BOOMER!
Guest 11:14 a.m. What are the chances that Reggie Jackson is in OKC in two years? Do you think he is playing at the level of James Harden in Harden's third year in the NBA?
Berry Tramel 11:15 a.m. I think Jackson's chances are decent. I don't think he's playing at Harden's level. Harden's third year was 2011-12, which was the NBA Finals year. Harden was awfully good. Jackson has approached that at times, but he's also faltered at times.
The voice inside your head 11:15 a.m. Perk is not useless. Just because he's on a bad contact doesn't mean he doesn't do good things for the team. Tell Traber to reel it in a bit or Perk might crush him into a fine powder. Amnesty is not a good idea. I highly doubt anyone would pay 9 million for him. Might as well keep him. We'll still have to pay him at least 7 million. No one will pay him more than 2 million leaving us to cover the rest. I'd rather have him on the team. He's a great team mate and the guys love him.
Berry Tramel 11:16 a.m. The reason you think about amnesty is because whatever you have to pay PErk -- $7M or so -- doesn't count against the salary cap and luxury tax. But OKC still might not amnesty him. If you've got to pay him anyway, you might just keep him for one final year. If Adams is going to be the starter, you'll still need a backup. Perk would be a great backup center. Play him on defense when you need him, use Adams when you don't.
harry man 11:16 a.m. berry i was told that you do radio back in OKC. is that right? how can I hear you from hawaii...any help would do
Berry Tramel 11:17 a.m. I'm on from 4:40-5:25 p.m. Oklahoma time.
Guest 11:17 a.m. you are an idiot
Berry Tramel 11:17 a.m. GO BOOMER!
Patrick2 11:17 a.m. Do you think Mike Holder will have a discussion with Steve Patterson about Texas' rather thinly-disguised ploy to stiff OSU on Wickline's buyout? Seems pretty cheap for a program as loaded as Texas.
Berry Tramel 11:18 a.m. I don't know if it's a Holder-Patterson discussion, or a lawyer discussion. But it seems to me you're right. It's thinly-disguised. No way will Wickline coordinate the Texas offense. Charlie Strong brought his successful O-coordinator with him from Louisville, and yet Shawn Watson won't coordinate the Texas offense? In favor of someone who has not been a coordinator? Doesn't pass the smell test.
Patrick2 11:18 a.m. Men's Bedlam b-ball prediction?
Berry Tramel 11:18 a.m. OU. I always pick the home team. Do you realize it's been like 10 years since OSU won in Norman? Amazing.
Will 11:19 a.m. Berry- Enjoyed your piece on Allen Fieldhouse earlier this week. The place is awesome and belongs on anyone's sports bucket list. In your opinion, which do you enjoy more; Allen Fieldhouse or the Cotton Bowl on the 2nd Saturday in October?
Berry Tramel 11:19 a.m. Oh, the cotton Bowl, easy. But not because of the stadium. Because of the total environment. The fair, the pageantry, the rivalry. All those things. But just venues, Allen Fieldhouse is No. 1.
Bubbeh 11:20 a.m. I feel like OKC matches up better with Miami these days. They can't double and shadow Reggie like they did Harden in the Finals because that'd leave Lamb or Fisher open. Also, Adams could help clog the paint.Don't get me wrong Miami still has the advantage. Just my .02
Berry Tramel 11:20 a.m. Here's why I think OKC matches up better with the HEat now than then. OKC is better and Miami is worse. Both teams are older. Which is good for the Thunder and bad for the Heat.
Bubbeh 11:21 a.m. I like turtles, do you like turtles?
Berry Tramel 11:21 a.m. I heard a good turtle just yesterday. If you ever see a turtle atop a fence, you know one thing. It didn't get there by himself.
harry man 11:21 a.m. Thanks. a question. who is the best athlete you saw in your time at the daily oklahoman?
Berry Tramel 11:23 a.m. Well, athlete is a loaded word. If you're talking athlete as in "World's Greatest Athlete," win-the-decathlon-type-athlete, I'd be hard-pressed to go past Russell Westbrook. If you're talking best at doing what he does, well, I'd be hard-pressed to go past Kevin Durant. I mean, Kevin Durant might be one of the 10 best basketball players in the history of the world. The world is a big place and history is a long time.
Will 11:23 a.m. Can you imagine being a junior or senior living in the dorms on campus? Could Strong's "rules" backfire quickly on him in Austin? Guess it all comes down to what occurs between the lines, right?
Berry Tramel 11:24 a.m. I think that is a potential problem. You're right, if Texas wins, it's all fine. But that becomes an economic problem. Living off campus gives players a chance to bunk together -- three guys rent a house, for example -- and receive the scholarship check for room and/or board. Strong's rules closes that window.
The voice inside your head 11:24 a.m. Marcus Smartt will end the drought in Norman. It's on his to do list before going first in the NBA draft. Even free hot dogs couldn't get 3k into Low Noise Center
Berry Tramel 11:25 a.m. Oh, Lloyd Noble will be packed Monday night. And OSU very well could win. But not because it's on a to-do list. You cannot will your way to basketball victories. You have to play your way there. Which includes smart play. Smart can't get dumb fouls.
Patrick2 11:25 a.m. Are all Big 12 TV basketball games set before the season? Very unfortunate for the 17-1, No.8-ranked Cowgirls team that they've barely been televised. But, I believe their game with Baylor on Sunday is televised.
Berry Tramel 11:26 a.m. I don't understand it. You'd think with OSU signing that package with Fox Sports Southwest, you'd see more of the Cowgirls. But you're right. Very little coverage. Yes, the Baylor game Sunday is on the tube.
dr. el prez 11:26 a.m. Berry, it's nice to escape this Richard Sherman thing and talk some sports. Hypothetically speaking, if Gundy had dismissed Bill Young and Joe Wickline in the same year--would Boone have intervened swinging his sword?
Berry Tramel 11:26 a.m. No, I don't think so. I think Boone lets Gundy do his thing. He might not like it, but I see no evidence that boone intervenes or is interested in intervening. He and Gundy really don't have much of a relationship anymore.
harry man 11:26 a.m. john smith from del city not bad as a athlete of the best to
Berry Tramel 11:27 a.m. Excellent point., John Smith and Shannon Miller were the very best in the world at what they do. I couldn't argue with either one.
Overzealous 11:27 a.m. How does OKC's season end this year?
Berry Tramel 11:27 a.m. I'm starting to believe the Thunder has the best team. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the season ends with a championship parade along the Bricktown Canal.
Crimson Jesus 11:27 a.m. Are there any Big 12 restrictions for Kendal Thompson transferring since he'll be a graduate? So he could hypothetically start at Iowa State next season or something?
Berry Tramel 11:28 a.m. He can transfer and play immediately at any school that offers a graduate degree program unavailable at OU. Which is most schools. Very few schools have identical grad programs.
D Magic Man 11:28 a.m. Is Baker Mayfield enrolled at OU currently
Berry Tramel 11:29 a.m. I am told yes. In fact, I am told that Mayfield is hanging out with the Sooner squad and will be with the team. Heck, he'll be the scout team QB next season. Why not?
Overzealous 11:29 a.m. How would you defend Lebron if you were Brooks?
Berry Tramel 11:30 a.m. Well, I'd start out Durant on him, and after one foul, switch. Move Thabo over there. And here's something to keep an eye on. Perry Jones will get some minutes on LeBron. Jones could go from playing not at all in a Western Conference Finals to playing 10-15 minutes a night against the Heat. I think Brooks is testing out Jones, to see if he can at least stay in front of LeBron.
harry man 11:30 a.m. berry tramel agrees with harry man..i am going to play the lottery
Berry Tramel 11:30 a.m. Why stop there? Jump out of a plane without a chute.
Tom 11:30 a.m. I heard Tyler Evans will play next year. Have you heard anything?
Berry Tramel 11:30 a.m. I heard he's going to try.
Overzealous 11:30 a.m. Would you rather play Miami in the Finals with homecourt or Indiana without homecourt?
Berry Tramel 11:31 a.m. Indiana without homecourt. Not even close. The Thunder matches up very well with the Pacers. OKC has big guys to throw on Hibbert, and a huge edge with Westbrook over George Hill.
Berry Tramel 11:31 a.m. OK, great questions. I appreciate it. Talk to you next week.
