Chat transcript: Jenni Carlson talks about Kendrick Perkins, Bedlam and more on the Power Lunch chat

by Jenni Carlson Published: February 14, 2014
NewsOK Sports 9:45 a.m. Welcome to the Power Lunch chat. Jenni Carlson will be on at 11 a.m., so get your questions in now on the Thunder at the mid-way point, Bedlam basketball this weekend and anything else.
Bill Crum 10:32 a.m. Hey, all! Can't wait to get chatting here in a half hour or so. Send your questions in now.
Jenni Carlson 10:32 a.m. Oops. That wasn't Bill. That was me.
Jenni Carlson 11:00 a.m. It's go time! Woot.
J.D. 11:01 a.m. After last season's playoffs where Kendrick Perkins had 24 pts. 24 turnovers and 39 fouls and then this season where he's averaging pretty much career lows at 3.5 pts. 5 rbds. AND of course the recent Miami game where Brooks finally pulled him out of the lineup and the Thunder went from being down by 20 to winning by 17...all of these things add up to him being pulled from the starting lineup in favor of Adams or Collison yet Brooks refuses to do so. In my opinion if he continues to start Perkins in the playoffs they're going to lose a series they shouldn't because of his horrific play. I understand they're having success but this team has a great chance to win it all and last year's playoff showed that Perkins just has no business being on the court anymore. What on earth will it take for Brooks to figure this out?
Jenni Carlson 11:01 a.m. More Perk-isn't-valuable talk? Really? This is how we're going to start things off? OK, here we go ...
Jenni Carlson 11:02 a.m. People don't value defense in basketball. Bottom line. That used to be the case in baseball. Fans didn't if you could field like a Hoover vacuum if you only hit a .150. But the thing is, sometimes guys are so good in the field, you accept their offensive deficiencies. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:03 a.m. That is the case with Perk. He is so good defensively that the Thunder is willing to stomach is abysmal offensive game. Will Steven Adams one day be as good as Perk is defensively? Perhaps. Will Adams one day replace Perk in the starting lineup? Most likely. But that day ain't here yet. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:05 a.m. Against teams with big men, Perk is a huge asset. He didn't play against the Heat because the Heat is a different beast; it plays such great small ball. But few teams are like them. That means Perk is much more likely to be in the game than not for the foreseeable future. And the Thunder is better for it.
Blindman 11:05 a.m. Very interesting observation after last nights Thunder game. The whole section behind the Thunder bench gave the Thunder a standing ovation as the team left the court. "Away" fans always mob the Thunder enroute to the locker room. Says volumes for the Thunder and sportsmanship in professional sports.
Jenni Carlson 11:06 a.m. I have to admit -- I didn't see that part of the postgame. I will say, though, that it looked like a lot of folks behind the Thunder bench were Thunder fans. When the Thunder did something good during the game, folks in that section tended to cheer. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:06 a.m. So, maybe there were Laker fans giving the Thunder a standing ovation, but if it was largely that section behind the bench, those looked to me to be Thunder fans, family, personnel, etc.
harry man 11:07 a.m. so the all star week is here. will you watch any of the OVERRATED all star weekend? the game on sunday? I will Not. hm
Jenni Carlson 11:07 a.m. Harry Man with the early check-in. I didn't even know you got up this early on the islands, HM! ;) ...
Jenni Carlson 11:07 a.m. All-Star Weekend doesn't do much for me. I definitely haven't watched an entire All-Star Game in years. Heck, maybe never. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:08 a.m. Used to catch the dunk contest and shooting contest when possible, but without big names, I'm not that interested in those parts of the weekend either. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:09 a.m. The thing that I find kind of fun is seeing how the players interact with each other. Like, who's clowning around with who on the sideline during the dunk contest? I'm not sure it means anything, but it's always somewhat interesting to me to see who looks buddy buddy with one another.
harry man 11:09 a.m. I believe that 5 daily oklahoman sports department guys could beat the lakers...very ugly game last night in LA
Jenni Carlson 11:10 a.m. Well, Harry Man, we don't have anyone QUITE as tall as Chris Kaman, so I think we'd get DESTROYED in the paint. Baldwin gets winded. Berry's knees are getting old. I'm told that Anthony needs to pass the ball more. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:10 a.m. Yeah, you may like our chances, but I'm pessimistic.
David 11:10 a.m. Can you give more detail behind what seems to be tension between Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma media (specifically John Hoover and Tramel)? Tramel has gone so far as to say Gundy has been dishonest at times, pretty hefty statement without much detail.
Jenni Carlson 11:11 a.m. I can't speak for Gundy. Don't want to either. So, all that I can give you is the media perspective. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:12 a.m. We are ask questions that aren't always comfortable. Who's going to be your starting quarterback? How are you going to manage three or more guys who want that spot? Does the Wes Lunt situation have any impact on things? ...
Jenni Carlson 11:13 a.m. We ask those things because they're the type of things that fans want to know about. We are asking questions of coaches and athletes because fans don't usually have the chance to. So, if we sometimes ask uncomfortable questions, that might ruffle some feathers. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:14 a.m. As to where Gundy's coming from, I'm not sure. He used to be great for us to deal with. Open. Witty. Interesting. That sure isn't the case any more.
David 11:14 a.m. Any chance that the Big 12 could choose not to enforce this new 10 second college football rule in conference play? Seems like the vast majority of the conference is against it.
Jenni Carlson 11:14 a.m. Seems doubtful, but it's an interesting thought. What if everyone just agreed to turn a blind eye? ...
Jenni Carlson 11:16 a.m. I don't think that'll happen, and frankly, I don't think it will have a huge impact on the locals. Tech, maybe. The Raiders ran 90 plays a game. But these past couple years, the Sooners and Cowboys haven't been nearly as uptempo as before. Seems like they may have decided to slow it down a bit to give their defenses a little more of a breather on the sidelines.
Mark 11:16 a.m. Thoughts on new OSU O-line coach?
Jenni Carlson 11:16 a.m. I know Bob Connelly's his name and that he was announced as the new OL coach at Georgia Southern THREE DAYS AGO. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:17 a.m. Seems odd to me for him to take a job there so recently, only to take the OSU job. Almost makes me wonder if OSU wasn't on his radar, or vice versa, only a couple days ago. Why would he take that job if he thought OSU was a possibility? ...
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. Beyond that, though, I know little of him. Gundy has tended to make really good hires, so I give him the benefit of the doubt about this guy. That said, Connelly fills some HUGE shoes. Wickline was superb.
Richard Sherman 11:18 a.m. How man more games would you project OSU to lose (even with Marcus Smart back in the line-up)? They just don't look like the same team effort-wise as they were in Nov-Dec.
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. They are hard to watch, and that was the case BEFORE Smart got suspended. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:19 a.m. OK, let's look at this. Games remain vs. OU, at Baylor, vs. Tech, at TCU, vs. Kansas, vs. Kansas State and at Iowa State. TCU, to me, is the only one that I'd say is a for-sure win. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:21 a.m. Tech and Baylor are winnable, though with Smart out at Baylor and just coming back vs. Tech, those will be interesting games. But let's say they win both of those -- a stretch, I'd think -- can you see them winning any of the others? ...
Jenni Carlson 11:21 a.m. Looks like at least four more losses. Unless Smart returns and they have a big renaissance. Could happen, but they'll have to find a gear that they haven't had since November or so.
Scott 11:21 a.m. How on earth is OSU favored over OU (anyone) tomorrow? Has anyone in Vegas seen this team play in the past 3 weeks?
Jenni Carlson 11:22 a.m. I don't pretend to know what makes Vegas tick, but I have to think OSU being at home and OU losing at home to Tech has to play into that.
Tyler 11:22 a.m. and Darnell shoot to many 3s and have alot of turnovers
Jenni Carlson 11:22 a.m. You're probably right about that, Tyler.
Patrick 11:22 a.m. So, is OSU having bake sales to try and raise money to buy out Ford's contract? I know it's high, but how much farther can they let interest in the program dwindle? Cobbins' injury is nobody's fault, but the lack of depth, lack of discipline, and showing poor leadership in letting the team completely implode are definitely on Ford.
Jenni Carlson 11:23 a.m. Patrick, interesting you bring up Travis Ford. My column for tomorrow is about the mood of OSU fans. We asked fans how they were feeling, and we got some very, very interesting responses. Most notably was how many fans mentioned Ford. You'll want to check that out. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:24 a.m. As for the buyout, it's $10 million or so. That's a high number for any athletic department, but at OSU, that would be a significant chunk of change. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:25 a.m. And here's what I'd say to OSU folks -- if you fire Ford, who replaces him? Who are you actually going to be able to get? Maybe there was a time when Bill Self could've been hooked, but the program is in such a state that it will be extremely difficult to lure a high-profile coach. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:26 a.m. Is someone like the coach at Wichita State possible? Or would he shoot for something higher than OSU? Those are the type of questions that OSU had better have answers to before they ever pull the trigger on firing Ford.
Patrick 11:26 a.m. After a big build-up, OSU's O-Line coaching hire seems pretty underwhelming. The guy got fired by Todd Graham at ASU after the 2012 season and coached HS last season. He's coached as some big-name schools like 'Bama, but when they were down. I would have thought they could do better after the success they've had the last few years.
Jenni Carlson 11:27 a.m. I thought they had a chance to go get Josh Henson and make him the co-offensive coordinator. Yurcich has clearly had issues as a playcaller. Henson was GREAT in his first year as OC at Missouri. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:28 a.m. And Henson is a Cowboy. It would take some work, but I thought he was a possibility. So, yes, to go from someone like that to where they ended up, not exciting. But like I said before, Gundy has made fairly solid hires over time. I'm not going to write this one off just because it wasn't a splash.
harry man 11:28 a.m. I have not seen pine tar mike baldwin's name on this chat in 100 years. he needs to be on. tell sports editor miker sherman that news
Jenni Carlson 11:28 a.m. Harry Man, I'll be sure to pass that on. And by the way, "Miker" Sherman? Miker. That makes me laugh, for some reason.
Scott 11:29 a.m. Who is your favorite twitter user in Oklahoma? @DeanBlevins is hilarious (in a laughing AT him, not WITH him kind of way)... My fav = @GinaMizell
Jenni Carlson 11:29 a.m. I don't know about the first, but I agree that the second follow is a good one. She's been golden for us, and I get the feeling that OSU fans appreciate her coverage, too.
Jenni Carlson 11:30 a.m. All right, folks, I've got to head to the video studio. Sorry that I can't stay longer, but be sure to join us again Monday for more Power Lunch. Mmm, lunch.
