•To Mike Krzyzewski's Olympic basketball coaching. A college coach trying to guide NBA stars can be dicey, but Coach K led the Americans to smooth sailing.
•To the drop in home runs. The major league leader, the White Sox's Carlos Quentin, is on pace to hit 44 homers, which would be the fewest to lead baseball since Matt Williams' 43 in 1994.
•To ex-Sooner Merrill Green, Jack Mildren's high school coach at Abilene Cooper. Green also coached at Bryan, another Texas power, and Friday night, Bryan Viking Stadium will be renamed Merrill Green Stadium.
•To the Rangers' call-up of Nelson Cruz. Not only do the RedHawks lose the slugger for the PCL playoffs, but Cruz's bid to become Oklahoma City's single-season home run leader ends one shy of Dave Roberts' 1965 record of 38.
•To NFL exhibition games. The Vikings play in Texas Stadium tonight, but don't expect to see Tony Romo or Adrian Peterson or several other front-line players, who will be held out. The NFL charges top-shelf prices for exhibition games but doesn't produce top-shelf entertainment.
•To baseball's installation of instant replay. Doesn't matter whether you're for it or against it. No way should it be implemented in late August, right in the middle of a pennant race.
