•To Joe Strong, an 18-year-old Midwest City boxer who next week will fight in a tournament at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 164-pounder from Badd Lands Gym already has won a U.S. regional tournament, and though the Olympic team already has been selected, Strong could move into national contention with a championship in Colorado Springs.

•To the old Oklahoma City Cavalry, who knew how to sniff out coaching prospects. In April 1991, the Cavs interviewed four for their vacancy: Terry Stotts, Henry Bibby, Flip Saunders and George Karl. Bibby got the job, but the other three became NBA head coaches, and Karl and Saunders have been big winners.

•To the eight-game Friday schedule at State Fair Arena last week and this week. The more state tournament teams that get to play in the Big House, the better.

•To ESPN's Big Monday schedule this season. Four of the eight Big 12 telecasts have been blowouts: 85-55 (Kansas over OU), 90-71 (KU over Missouri), 77-50 (Texas over A&M) and 109-51 (KU over Texas Tech). The three Kansas games all were in Lawrence, which means anyone could have seen the blowouts coming.

•To the weakness of the Big 12 North, which could produce two fraudulent champions in men's and women's basketball. The South has six of the best eight men's teams and four of the best five women's teams. The Kansas men and Kansas State women might finish first, and they would have gotten there via Easy Street.

•To KSBI, which is televising the state basketball tournament, a fine thing, but this week chose to show only games from classes 5A and 6A. It's clear the public interest rests mainly with the smaller schools.
